CABLE TV’s News Service to Land in
New Zealand
| (March 15, 2003 Hong Kong)
The Chinese community in New Zealand will be able to keep abreast of Hong
Kong events round-the-clock following an agreement between Hong Kong Cable
Enterprises Limited (HKCE), the exclusive programme distribution agent of
Hong Kong Cable Television Limited (CABLE TV), and World TV Limited (WTV)
of New Zealand.
Under the agreement, CABLE TV’s
24-hour news service, financial reports as well as current affairs and
cultural programmes will be distributed via WTV’s platform throughout
New Zealand from April 1, 2003. Since last year, CABLE TV’s news
production is already in digital format. With the advent of broadband
technology, CABLE TV’s digitised programmes will be distributed to New
Zealand round-the-clock via an IP platform, enabling significant saving in
transmission cost.
Chief Operating Officer of HKCE, Mr.
Samuel Tsang, said the new transmission technology had opened up new
ground for distribution of programmes internationally. “The technology
we have harnessed has cleared a major hurdle, i.e., the high satellite
distribution cost, that previously existed in licensing our programmes to
overseas distributors,” he added.
Mr Tsang said the agreement with WTV
is a vote of confidence on the quality of the new distribution technology
and CABLE TV’s news service.

CABLE News is the first 24-hour News
Channel in Asia, and also the first in Asia to fully digitalize its news
production process.
Chief Executive Officer of WTV , Mr.
Henry Ho , said the new transmission technology had opened new ground for
WTV to bring in quality television programmes economically for the benefit
of WTV subscribers who are interested in updated programmes from Hong Kong
Cable. “ I believe the same technology shall be able to benefit Chinese
communities in other countries. WTV is delighted to have the opportunity
to work with HKCE for this new transmission technology,” he added.
